Roman pottery handled jar
Described in the archive as: (Not illustrated) Handle section of handled jar in Black Burnished Ware. Cf. Gillam 1976. no. 15. Gillam dates the type to early-mid 2nd Century A.D. but the form also occurs in late Iron Age and early Roman contexts in Southern Britain. Cf. Richmond ---- Had 2. fig. 20. Da/a (check) and Jarvis & Maxfield 1975. no. 29. In view of the other finds from this context a 2nd Century A.D. date does however seem more probable.
