Food warmer (hot water plate), earthenware, in the form of a hollow covered dish, standing on a rounded foot-rim, deep curving sides and spreading rim, the top in the form of a plate, a raised edge around the well, spreading rim, eight shallow notches and lobes to the rim, to one side below the rim a short rounded pipe, to the opposite side a longer rounded spout the tip of which has broken off; transfer-printed in blue with to the well the 'Whampoa' pattern, a chinoiserie-style scene showing in the foreground a number of elaborate pagodas linked by bridges and fences with a spreading spray of flowering branches issuing from one of the pagodas, in the background a Chinese junk and further pagodas on islands in an expanse of water, border to the exterior sides, spout and rim of flower heads, foliage, scrolls and lobed panels on a blue scale ground. The rim chipped.
