Mug
Straight sided, cylindrical pearlware mug, strap handle with foliate thumbpiece over secondary foliate scroll. Central medallion painted in black enamels with bust portrait of Nelson in naval uniform, set within a gilded border of tongues within bands; further gilded motif to either side of acorns, flowers and foliage with butterfly to right, and wheat ear and insect to left, gilt band around base and rim, gilding delineating handle and further decorated with gilt medallion and pendant husks.
The portrait is after a painting by Francis Lemuel Abbott, engraved in mezzotint in 1798. A number of mugs and jugs painted with Nelson were included at the Cambrian Warehouse sale in London, 1808.
