Thomas Smith & Sons Ltd. 5-ton steam crane

Five ton, four wheel, steam loco crane built by Thomas Smith & Sons (Rodley) Ltd, Leeds, 1925, builder’s no. 10,373. Obtained 1969 from Thomas H. Howell Ltd, Newport Works. Restored 1999 by Vale of Glamorgan Railway Society.

The crane was steam-driven and worked in the steel stock-holding yard of Thomas Howell of Newport. From the time the new crane was purchased in 1925 until its retirement in 1969 it had been operated by the same driver (Source: Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum Guidebook, 1984).
