ss LOCH MADDY (4996gt) : Built 1934 by Lithgows of Port Glasgow for Glasgow Navigation Co. (managed by Maclay and McIntyre). She was sailing from Vancouver to Leith on 20th February 1940 when she was torpedoed east of the Orkneys, killing 4 of her 39 crew, by the submarine U-57. She stayed afloat and was taken in tow but at 1.09 am on the 21st she received another torpedo, this time from the German submarine U-23, which broke her in two. The 35 survivors were picked up by destroyer HMS DIANA. She was carrying 2000 tons of wheat, 6000 tons lumber and aircraft.
