MUDEFORD, glass negative
Bow view of steam grab dredger MUDEFORD.
The little grab dredger Mudeford (invariably pronounced ‘Muddyford’ by those who remember her!) at Penarth Dock, c. 1951. Built for the Great Western Railway at Zaltbommel in the Netherlands in 1924, the 232 gross ton vessel was used mainly within the dock complex at Cardiff, dredging along the quay walls. She would also make the occasional foray up the Taff to dredge at the pumping station for the timber pond below Penarth Road bridge; this involved opening the Clarence Road swingbridge, and the Mudeford was probably the last vessel for which this was done.
