ECM: Llantwit Major; Samson Cross (replica)
Shaft of a composite cross, tapering to the base. The upper surface has a rectangular mortice, countersunk with wide shoulders; the upper edge is concave in elevation, indicating that the missing cross-head was a disc. There is carved decoration on all four sides and both faces are inscribed. A. Decorated in three main panels within a plain angle-moulding; 1. the top panel has mostly flaked away, but shows traces of fret patterning, 2. slightly shorter panel framed and divided vertically into two equal halves each containing Latin inscriptions, 3. Central panel, consisting of a square of ten-strand double-beaded plaitwork with irregular breaks. 4. Row of four square panels separated by plain beading, two inner ones containing inscriptions, the two outer ones double-beaded knots formed by interlinked oval loops. At the foot of each inscribed panel is a small incised Greek cross. 5. the bottom panel (partly defaced) consists of four squares. B. Left-hand edge; vertical panel. C. Three main panels of carved ornament; 1. (top panel) damaged and incomplete, 2. pair of rectangular half-panels: the left has an incised cross followed by an inscription to the left; the right, an inscription in two lines, 3. row of four square panels; the two inner ones contain inscriptions, with an incised Greek cross beneath each one, D. Right hand edge; vertical panel.

Site Name: St Illtyd's Church, Llantwit Major
Notes: Originally located standing to the west of the church, in the churchyard. Original monument is now located in the W. nave of the Church, where it was re-erected in 1903.
