Obverse. The King and queen seated on tasselled cushions under a tasselled canopy with fringed curtains looped up at the sides. The king, bearded, crowned, and robed in a fur cloak, wears the collar of an order; in his right hand is a tall sword slightly inclined; the queen is similarly attired and holds a sceptre flory in her left hand. Between the king and queen an altar-table bears a large orb surmounted by a cross pommée, upon the orb rest the left hand of the king and the right hand of the queen. The front of the table is inscribed with their initials: P. M. united by a knot of cord and ensigned with a crown. Above the orb, a shield, ensigned with the royal crown and encircled by the Garter bearing its motto: HONI SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE: per pale, dext. the arms of Philip, party per fess, the chief part quarterly, 1. and 4. CASTILE and LEÒN quarterly; 2. and 3. ARAGON impaling SICILY; the base part quarterly, 1. AUSTRIA (Modern), 2. BURGUNDY (Modern), 3. BURGUNDY (Ancient), 4. BRABANT; over all an inescutcheon, FLANDERS and TYROL impaled; sin. the arms of Mary, quarterly, FRANCE (Modern) and ENGLAND. Background slightly diapered. Roses and colons separate the words of the legend.
