Roman copper alloy Trumpet brooch
The spring is supported by a heavy cast lug at the rear of the head, which accommodates the axial bar and was notched beneath to hold the internal chord. Though a hinged form is also know, this is the typical spring arragnement of the main Trumpet series and of the Chester type, with some variation within subgroups. Here, there is no stop for the wire head loop. The trumpet head has a marginal border and an incised line, off centre, down the head of the bow. The waist decoration is half round only and the button projects sharply from its plain flanking mouldings. The upper and lower mouldings each originally consisted of a pair of lobed mouldings, a feature of the Chester type noted by Hull.
