Roman copper alloy jug lid
This lid has lost the knob which was used to lift it. Remains of an iron rivet which presumably secured the original knob are extant. A roughly circular hole, behind and slightly to one side of the rivet, probably denotes an attempt to replace the lost knob, an attempt which appears to have ended in failure when the lid cracked from the newly cut hole to the outer edge. There is now no evidence of the hinge mechanism but the outer edge, marked elsewhere by a slightly rolled border, is lost to the rear of the lid.
