M.V. HORNBY GRANGE, glass negative

Known in Cardiff as the 'Grange boats', the vessels of the Houlder Line were regular visitors to the port, carrying cargoes of refrigerated meat from South America. The distinctive outline of these vessels can be seen clearly in this view of the Hornby Grange in the Queen Alexandra Dock, c. 1950. She was a refrigerated motor vessel of 10,785 gross tons, built at Newcastle in 1946. By this date, Houlder Line was part of the Furness Withy group.

Chilled meat carrier purpose-built in 1946 by R&W Hawthorn, Leslie & Co Ltd, Hebburn-on-Tyne (with twin 4-cylinder Doxford diesel engines), for Houlder Brothers & Co Ltd. 1969 – Sold to Royal Mail Line , and renamed DOURO. She was broken up in 1972. (TheShipsList/Houlder Line)
