Panel
Panel, carved with linenfold pattern, 16th century.
This small piece of oak panelling has been carved with a ‘linenfold’ pattern. This pattern was fashionable from the 1300s to the 1500s and was used to decorate plain panels on fixed woodwork and furniture.
It comes from Llanfihangel Court, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. It was from a room which had this pattern carved on one side of a partition, with with a painted design on the reverse facing into another room. This part of the house was built in 1559 when it was owned by Rhys Morgan.
