Waist hook
Waist hook for holding a ball of yarn.
Knitters often wore hookd suspended from their waists to hold a ball of wool as they worked the needles and yarn. they were especially useful if the knitter wanted to walk and work at the same time. Yarn hooks were usually made of metal or horn. This example comes from north Wales.
