Spinning wheel
A great wheel. Drive wheel 1100mm in diameter, with 12 spokes. The hub and spokes are turned, the spokes have no decorative features and the hub has simple line decoration. The rim of the wheel is made from 3 pieces of 65mm wide 4mm thick pieces of wood nailed together and to the ends of the spokes. The hole through the hub is lined with copper. The wheel is held on its wooden axle by a split pin that passes through a hole in the axle. The axle is held in the post by a wooden wedge. The post passes through a slot in the table and is held in place by two wedges on the underside of the table. The table has 4 legs and notched decoration at both ends. The head post also fits into a slot in the table and is held in place with wedges under the table. The top of the head post has a simple but decorative shape. The spindle would have been held by the copper lined holes in the two pieces of wood that pass through slots in the top of the head post and are held in place by wedeges. There is a piece of iron wire bent to produce a short coil in the side of the table on the wheel side a little behind the head post. [RP; 25/03/2008]
