Auger
A twist auger for boring holes 3.4cm in diameter. It comprises of a bit (the cutting part), on a shank which ends in a tang to fit into a wooden handle(separate). The screw lead at the tip of the bit pulls the auger through the hole, reducing the amount of pressure required. (Salaman Dictionary of Woodworking Tools)
Circular cross section shank rising from bit but this becomes square section after approx. 110mm. The tang on the end is of rectangular cross section and at an angle to the square section of the shank below it. [RP; 16/04/2009]
