Auger
A twist auger for boring holes 2.54cm/ 1"in diameter. It comprises of a bit (the cutting part), on a shank which ends in a horizontal barrel eye. The screw lead at the tip of the bit pulls the auger through the hole, reducing the amount of pressure required. (Salaman Dictionary of Woodworking Tools)
The shank from the horizontal barrel eye is of a square section whereas the shank from the bit is of a circular section [RP; 16/03/2009]
