large horizontal gear wheel bolted beneath a cast iron frame; connected by a shaft through the frame to an 'x' shaped casting at the top; this would be bolted to the wooden shaft and a support brace; as the top casting and gear wheel go round they would turn a smaller gear wheel on the side of the frame, turning the connecting rod
