Eisteddfod chair
Chair awarded to the poet D. Gwenallt Jones (1899-1968) at the 1926 Swansea National Eisteddfod. The chair is one of a pair of National Eisteddfod chairs made in Shanghai. This is the first example, (the other dates to 1933). Apart from the date, location and Gorsedd motto, the inscriptions and carvings are all Chinese. The chair is believed to have been made in the craft workshops of the T'ou-se-we Catholic orphanage on the outskirts of Shanghai. D Gwenallt Jones (1899-1968) was brought up in Alltwen, Swansea Valley. During the First World War he was a conscientious objector and was imprisoned. He became known as a poet when he won the chair at the 1926 Eisteddfod in Swansea for his awdl, ‘Y Mynach’ (the Monk). He was lecturer of Welsh at Yr Hen Goleg, Aberystwyth University from 1927 until his retirement.
