Roman stone mortar
Part of a large bowl, or mortar, carved from a quartz-feldspar porphyry (idenitified by Dr. R. Owens). The weathering of the feldspar and quartz has given rise to a porous texture which the surface of the piece would not originally have had, and a fresh fracture shows a dense, non-vesticular interior. The stone may be a Cornish elvan.
