Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe
Bronze Age bronze socketed axe fragment
Dimensions: maximum surviving blade width 53.3mm; width at break 43.8mm; thickness at break 13.0mm; surviving depth of socket 2.2mm; surviving weight (prior to conservation) 42.7g.
This is the blade-end fragment of a bronze socketed axe, whose blade-edge shows marked recurve at each side. This indicates an axe with a flaring blade end and a deep crescentic cutting-edge. Along the break interior, the base of the socket is visible. The blade-edge is eroded in places with light green corrosion showing. Both blade bevels have surface scratches, suggesting recent damage on retrieval of the artefact. The blade surfaces have a dark-green patina.
