Deep Pit, Bristol, photograph
Deep Pit, Speedwell, Bristol. This pit originally sunk in the 18th Century was enlarged and deepened by Cossham in the 1870s. The photograph shows the five coal screens erected by Cossham at that time. The smalls fall through the screens into the wagons below. Horses and carts take away the large coals to sell in the market. An ancient steam locomotive operates on the right.
