Cope

Kilbride, Gilbert (weaver and vestment maker) (Gilbert Kilbride (d. 2010) was a weaver and vestments maker based in Llanover. Originally from Sussex, he trained under the tutorship of his father, Valentine Kilbride, who had established the family firm in 1925 and whose work can be seen in churches across the world. Gilbert Kilbride relocated to Wales in 1989.)

Robes (mitre, cope, stole, rochet and morse) worn by Dr Rowan Williams on his enthronement as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, 27 February 2003. Dr Williams was the first Welshman to lead the Anglican Communion and the first since the 13th century to be appointed from beyond the English Church.

Cope made from one piece of dark yellow silk with a gold silk lining (fastened to the hem with small cords). The silk cloth was hand-woven by Gilbert Kilbride of Llanover, and made-up and finished by his wife, Wendy Kilbride. The cope has a hood which is made from the same yellow silk and lined in the pale yellow. There are three white silk strips embroidered with crosses and Celtic patterns, on the front edges and at the centre-back. Stitched by hand in silk, cotton and gold threads. There are six metal loops (three on each side) sewn to the front edges of the cope, below the hood to attach morse.
