Seal impression: Beaumaris, Second Common seal
A single masted carvel-built warship (possibly reflecting the strategic importance of Beaumaris) showing two decks of gun-ports; main mast with main yard and square sail, and fighting top provided with spears or pikes; square stern-castle and break at bow. At either end are displayed the two maces the borough was ordered (in 1562) to possess. The charter and privileges granted to Beaumaris by Edward I (1296) were confirmed and extended by Elizabeth I (22nd June 1562), and resulted in this new common seal being engraved. The date of 8 FEB engraved on the hull, and the year 1562 inscribed in the legend, suggest that the seal was made, or came into use on 8th February 1563 (the calender year then extending until Lady Day, 25th March). It replaced an earlier medieval seal which also depicted a single masted ship, together with an escutcheon and castle.
