Patchwork quilt
Patchwork quilt made in about 1870 by Mrs Strong of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA. The quilt was later sent back to her family in Wales. White cover with applique stylized floral patchwork motifs in red, pink and green. White cotton lining.
'Some key men from Dowlais Steelworks went to Pittsburg USA about 1860. Their wives formed a Welsh club where they met for singing and Welsh quilting. This particular quilt was made there and it shows not only exquisite quilting but also really beautiful patchwork. It was awarded first prize at a Cardiff Exhibition about 1910'. [Letter from the vendor to the Museum, 1946].
