Fan
White fan with painted satin leaf and bone (?) sticks and guards. Sticks and guards have carved floral design and guards also have trellis design in upper area. White fan leaf is made of two layers of thick satin fabric (warp = silk, weft = cellulosic) which are adhered on to either side of the sticks. There appears to be a paper inter-layer in-between the two outer layers of fabric (judging by feel & sound). The upper and lower edges of the fan leaf are bound with a narrow strip of white tabby woven cellulosic fabric (c. 0.2cm on either side). The front of the leaf is hand painted with a floral spray in brown, yellow white and grey. The spray is slightly to the left of the fan, roughly between the 3rd and 8th stick from the left.
Fan is held together at bottom by iron pin over a domed brass washer; brass suspension hoop is attached at same place.
14 sticks and 2 guards
Plus pale lilac cardboard case with hinged lid which closes over a narrow lip (width = 0.9cm). Long, rectangular cardboard box covered with shiny, pale lilac paper. On the lid, the lilac paper is adhered over a brown/green paper (which may have had a metallic finish that is now tarnished). This is showing along the edges (a width of c. 0.4cm is exposed). The outside of the base of the box is finished off with a rectangular section of shiny white paper which is adhered over the edges of the lilac paper. Same shiny white paper on both sides of lip of box (covered by lid when box is closed) Elsewhere, the inside of the lid and of the box are unfinished cardboard. The hinge of the box is reinforced with a strip of cellulosic twill fabric, which can be seen underneath the lilac paper.
