Girl's swimsuit

Child's yellow halterneck bathing suit. Worn in Llanarth, 1950-2.

Turquoise and orange floral design on yellow and white check ground. Front is constructed of four lengths of fabric which are joined together with vertical seams. Towards the neck is a narrow elasticated section (tightly gathered fabric held together with elastic on the reverse) and another flat section at the neck. These elasticated and flat sections are each made up of two pieces of fabric and are seamed down the centre. The upper part of the front has a facing of self fabric, made up of three sections, joined by vertical seams. The bathing suit has a halter-neck: a semi-transparent button is stitched to the inside of each upper corner. A strip of self-fabric (each end fitted with two button holes for variable adjustment) is fed around the neck and is fastened to those buttons.
The rear of the bathing suit has a deep cut out to half-way down the back. It is made up of two pieces of fabric which are joined by a central, vertical seam. It is heavily rouched: there are 12 rows of elasticated gathering which progressively dip down in the centre to accommodate the shape of the leg holes. The leg holes themselves are also elasticated. Gusset reinforced with a layer of self fabric. A synthetic fabric label with blue print is attached to the inner side seam, close to the top.
