Woollen petticoat worn by Mrs Jones, Penclawdd, late 1800s.

Grey, black and red vertical stripes. Top is pleated into a 9cm wide brown cotton waist band. Long slit at centre-back with two button fastening. There is only one centre back seam. The lower edge of the skirt has a 17cm wide turn-back which is stitched in place with running stitches using light brown flax thread. A 13-14cm wide strip of grey cellulosic fabric (made up of three sections) has been used to cover up the turnback on the inside of the skirt. It is woven with white horizontal and black vertical yarns. The hem is encapsulated in a black wool braided tape. A 27cm long section has been repaired with black wool tape woven in a herringbone twill pattern. The brown cotton waistband has yellow and salmon-pink horizontal stripes. It is woven so that it is joined to a white lining in such a way that a channel is formed, presumably for the insertion of a draw string. The lower edge of the outer brown fabric as well as the white lining are selvages. The weave of both is an imbalanced tabby weave with thin warps and thick wefts, resulting in a vertical rib effect. The white lining has a rectangular purple stamp: 'The Vorwerk Standard Quality German Manufacture'. The upper button (bone?) is cream and the lower button (plastic?) is slightly larger and is brown. Both have four holes and are stitched in place using flax thread. The button holes are machine stitched. The vertical edge of the waist band beside the button holes is also machine stitched. All other stitches on skirt are hand stitched.
