Caernarvon

BRETT, John (1830-1902)

This idyllic summer landscape is taken from the fields in between the villages of Brynsiencyn and Dwyran on the Isle of Anglesey. The MenaiStrait is hidden by the foreground hills but Caernarfon castle and the town are just visible in the middle distance. Rising up behind the castle is Mynydd Mawr, the ElephantMountain, and in the left background are the slopes of Moel Eilio. Brett was much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and by the writing of their most famous supporter, John Ruskin. Brett had visited Anglesey in 1866 and 1867 while he was a batchelor, but in 1875 he spent three months in north Wales with his wife and young family and made a number of pencil studies and oil paintings of Caernarfon and the countryside surrounding the Menai Strait.
