Rent card of 1947-48 for an aluminium prefab bungalow in Caerleon Place, Fforestfach, Swansea. The card was issued by Swansea Borough Council, starting from week commencing 1 April 1947, for the tenants of no 12 Caerleon Place at the rate of 16s.3d a week. The front and back of the rent 'book' is blue; the back has a list of the conditions of tenancy. Inside the rent card is a paper receipt for a deposit paid 13 February 1948 (at beginning of tenancy) and a printed list of notes to the tenant relating to tenancy regulations for aluminium houses. Around 7,600 prefabs were built in Wales after the Second World War, as a short-term solution to house people who had lost their homes due to the bombing and key workers in cities. The aluminium houses were prefabricated in sections and assembled on site. At the time, they were considered modern and comfortable with features such as a fitted kitchen, indoor bathroom and hot water.
