Medieval ceramic heraldic floor tile
Lewis Group 16, no. 107
Heraldic floor tile, reconstructed from four fragments (possibly from different tiles of the same design), featuring the arms of Earl Gilbert de Clare, Lord of Glamorgan; a shield of arms, set diagonally, a gold (or) background and three red (gules) chevrons. Formal floral and leaf motifs springing from the top and sides and originally 5 roundels (only four present).
De Clare was a benefactor of the abbey, and a descendant of Robert Consul, for the good of whose soul the abbey had been founded.
