Alice Strong, Mrs Godfrey Clark, a'i mab Lionel
The Glamorgan industrialist Godfrey Lewis Clark (1855-1918) married Alice Strong in 1883. This large portrait is a powerful statement of the family’s social pretensions. She is seated with her three-year-old son and a large black Labrador (called ‘Meik’). The artist was an American painter, who spent much of his life in Europe. His portraits suggest the influence of his friend John Singer Sargent.
