Mug

Unknown

Mug, thickly potted buff coloured earthenware, inset base, cylindrical sides tapering slightly inwards, plain loop handle; covered all over apart from the base with a pinky-white tin glaze which has worn off around the lip-rim, painted in blue with to the front of the body the arms of the Carpenters' Company showing a shield with a chevron across it and three tied ribbons, the shield surrounded by scrolling foliage, above the shield the inscription "HSP / 1659".

This delftware mug is dated 1659 and decorated with the arms of the Carpenters' Company. The compass represents the tools of the trade and the chevron symbolises a roof support. These mugs were probably made for carpenters, including both members of the Company and non-members, who might have used the coat of arms in an unofficial capacity.
