"The way we were" exhibition, photograph
Mounted black and white photograph of Gadlys School 1913, shows three rows of girls.
Caption from exhibition "Gadlys School, 1913 (Natalie Marsh). Leanne Harris interviewed her grandmother. 'Children sat at wooden desks. Each desk had an ink well and each child had a wooden pen with a sharp mtal nib. Great care had to be taken with handwriting because the ink would be very messy. My most vivid memory at Primary School was learning my tables (2's to 12's) off by heart. At the age of 11 I sat the 11+ exam. Those who passed and whose parents could afford it, went to Grammer school and sat exams at 15. Those who failed or were poor went to the Secondary school and left at 14.'"
