Canopy
Canopy section of late Victorian bed-hangings. Designed to be hung upside-down and viewed from below. The warp is purple cotton with a loose s-twist the weft is predominantly wool (red, light green, dark green, khaki, yellow, ochre, deep purple). There is also a light yellow yarn which is more lustrous and appears to be a blend of silk and another animal fibre possibly angora. The woven pattern forms wide stripes with thinner ones in-between The canopy is made from one loom width of fabric and the top and bottom edges are turned and finished with an unbleached linen tape to reinforce them. There are holes along the edges which suggest that the canopy was once attached with tacks or nails.
