William Henry Davies (1871-1940)
W.H.Davies was born in Newport and spent 1893-99 in America, where he lost a foot in a train jumping accident and accumulated the experiences for his 'Autobiography of a Super Tramp'. His first book was published in 1905 and by 1911 he was established as an author of prose and poetry. Friendly with a number of artists, Epstein executed a bronze head of him in 1916. This portrait dates from 1916-18
