View of Meaux
MICHEL, Georges (1763-1843)
The grand cathedral of Meaux stands out from the flat countryside as it projects into a brooding sky. Michel was one of the earliest nineteenth-century French landscape artists to reject the neo-classical traditions of academic art and concentrate on natural atmospheric effects. He was inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch landscapes rather than Italianate sources and became an important precursor to the Barbizon School.
