Postcard

Valentine & Sons Ltd

Colour Postcard : "This pretty young maid brings greetings true, From the Lovely land of Wales, To you" (Artist Impression). Unused.

Postcards such as this popularised the image of the Welsh costume. Thousands were produced as souvenirs. They showed the Welsh lady drinking tea, reading the Bible or spinning outside her cottage. The aim was to portray Wales as a welcoming and wholesome place. Postcards contributed to the Welsh costume becoming a national icon.

Cyfrannodd cardiau post fel hyn at boblogrwydd ‘y wisg Gymreig’. Cafodd miloedd ohonynt eu gwerthu fel cofroddion. Roedden nhw’n dangos y Ladi’n yfed te, yn darllen y Beibl neu’n gwehyddu ger ei bwthyn. Y nod oedd dangos mai lle croesawgar a pharchus oedd Cymru. Yn ddi-os, cyfrannodd y cardiau post hyn at y syniad fod y wisg Gymreig yn symbol cenedlaethol.
