Marine engine model
Model of twin tandem compund marine engine, as fitted to the Inman liner S.S. City of New York in 1877. This was an unusual development in marine engineering in the late nineteenth century, as the great height required to house this type of engine made it impractical for ships. Nevertheless it was a highly successful engine as the City of New York was one of the holders of the Blue Riband of the North Atlantic. Her sister vessel, City of Rome, was the vessel used in a short-lived attempt to establish a trans-Atlantic service from Milford in 1889.
