Weed hook
Length of wood formed from their branch, with pointed head with single barb, socketed and nailed to handle. Stick (1015mm long) with bark, pointed at one end. The stick has a pronounced bend in it. The pointed end fits into a socket in the iron hook. The socket has a hole in it through which a nail passes fixing the hook to the stick/shaft. The hook is pointed and has a backward facing point (barb) on one side.
It was the local blacksmith who made and repaired the farmer’s implements and tools. He made a huge variety of items, from nails, staples and pig nose rings to hand tools like pitchforks and dung hooks. During harvesting and other busy periods, the smithy would be open for long hours to do urgent repairs.
