Roman lead bread stamp
Lead stamp used for marking loaves of bread. The letters are retrograde and recessed and the impression from the stamp reads:
C VIBI SEVE SEN PAULLIN
Translation: The century of Vibius Severus, (product) of Sentius Paullinus
Each century of 80 men, baked its own bread, in communal ovens outside the barrack blocks. These stamps would have shown who owned the bread when it came out of the oven. This object was found during excavations of the barracks at Caerleon in the 1920s.
