Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of Daniel O'Connell, white earthenware, crackle glaze, standing on green grass and against green brick support, on an oval plinth encircled by a black line. Dressed in black shoes, white trousers, white waistcoat, white shirt with black buttons, black underglaze coat buttoned up, green cravat, naturalistically painted face, grey hair, right hand on hip, left hand resting on a pillar draped with an orange cloak edged with green.
