Inkstand
Made from an oak tree found in excavating the West Bute Dock Basin, the tree was found under 34'6" of alluvial clay on a hard gravel bed. Given to Admiral William Henry Smyth in 1838 after he has superintended the building of the Bute Docks. Description of history of the inkstand handwritten in ink on paper label stuck to underside of centre recess lid.
