Roman samian bowl
The profile is quite sharply carinated. The upper zone decoration is a simple scroll with stylized leaves of three and four points and tiny triple circles. The lower zone decoration appears to be panelled and includes festoons formed of series of the small trifid ornament used in the upper zone. The festoons contain curving stems and Christmas tree leaves. The small triple circles are used by a number of potters. Crestio also used the Christmas tree leaf, and had designs incorporating leafy festoons. The small trifid ornament is the same size as one used by Meddillus. The general scheme of decoration in the lower zone could be somewhat like that from Fishbourne, or alternatively Knorr 1952, Taf. 56, M and N. The date is not easy to assess, but the form of the vessel makes a Claudian date unlikely.
