Teapot and cover

Höchst Porcelain Factory

Teapot, hard-paste porcelain, standing on a rounded spreading waisted foot-rim, bulbous body sloping inwards at the shoulder to a short cylindrical neck, raised moulded leaves around the lower body and shoulder, a wreath of raised moulded leaves and flowers around the neck, short curving spout modelled in the form of a serpent's head, high loop straight-backed handle with foliate mouldng along its length, round domed cover with twisted ball-shaped finial, moulded leaves around the base of the finial; the exterior body of the teapot and the top of the cover covered all over with a blue ground over which has been painted an elaborate gilt decoration creating a mesh-like pattern with blue dots showing through, the raised moulded areas painted gilt, gilt bands around the foot-rim, shoulder, lip-rim, and the rim of the cover, to either side of the exterior body of the teapot are reserved white oval panels painted in polychrome enamels with groups of fruit including lemons, grapes and apples, the panels enclosed by borders of gilt stylized flower heads, the spout, handle and finial painted in gilt. The finial and handle broken and repaired.
