Post-Medieval gold finger ring
Post medieval gold finger ring with inscription on the inner surface.
Gold ring with a hoop of flattened D cross-section. The outer surface is plain. The inner face of the hoop is inscribed in two lines of italic script with the text:
[Fate] [myne] with joy it bee on/ heaven with god on Earth with Thee
Later bevelling of the edges of the ring has removed the tops of letter in the upper row and bottom of letters in the lower row.
Posy rings inscribed with mottoes of love, fidelity or faith were popular in the post-medieval period, and were exchanged as tokens of love and affection. This example has a unique two-line posy, the first example of such to be discovered in Wales.
