Boxing gloves

Pair of boxing gloves owned by Jack Petersen. The letters L. Gains are handwritten inside the gloves. Petersen defended his British Empire title against boxer Larry Gains at the White City Stadium in 1934 in front of an audience of 64,000.

Jack Petersen OBE TD (2 September 1911 - 22 November 1990). Jack Petersen was born in Whitchurch, Cardiff. He was a Welsh boxing hero during the 1930s and became the first Welshman to win the British and Empire light heavyweight and heavyweight titles. He was one of Britian's biggest box office draws, fighting in front of crowds of up to 50,000 at Cardiff's Ninian Park. An eye injury forced Petersen to retire at 25 and he later became a city councillor and deputy chairman of the Sports Council for Wales.
