S.S. BARON HAIG, glass negative

The Baron Haig was one of the numerous vessels in the fleet of Hugh Hogarth & Sons of Ardrossan. This well-known Scottish company was founded in the late 1860s, initially owning a number of sailing ships. The Baron Haig was a 3,391 gross ton steamer built at Irvine in 1926 and she served the company for over thirty years before her sale to Panamanian owners in January 1956. She was eventually stranded in the Black Sea in April 1963. This view was taken in the Queen Alexandra Dock, c.1936.

S.S. BARON HAIG (3391 gt). Built 1926 at Ayrshire Dockyard Company, Irvine for H. Hogarth & Sons. Survived the war despite a collision off Ireland in 1941 with ss JESSMORE (which sank). 1956 : Sold to Panama and renamed ESTRELLA, but was wrecked in the Black Sea in 1963.
