Hooked knife

Curved knife used by James Davies. Abercych, south-west Wales, 1800s.

The village of Abercych in west Wales was once an important centre for wood-turning. One family of wood-turners were the Davieses. In the early years brothers, John and James, produced mainly dairy utensils and domestic bowls. When the demand dwindled they set up a small factory making handles for tools and implements, particularly for the mining industry.

A tool used for hollowing wooden spoons and bowls. It has a curved blade and with an undulating cutting edge, set in a dark, hardwood handle with steel ferrule securing it place.

Spoon making required a great deal of skill using a small variety of knives with curved blades. This one has several curves in the blade.
