Methane alarm
Oldham 'Methalarm' lamp type GT/GTL, a combined electric cap lamp/gas detector. Designed to give every miner his own gas alarm. The alarm threshold can be set between 1% and 2.5% methane and the lamp flashes as a warning.
A web site describes the device as 'a recent development' in 1986. This example we have has been made up as an 'inspection lamp' with carrying handle and appears to be a pre- production model as the production models have 'OLDHAM' stamped on the head piece. It is likely that very few (if any) were actually issued within the UK coal industry.
