Medal awarded to Nathaniel Phillips Bland for saving lives at the shipwreck of the Harriett, off St David’s Head, 21 February 1823.
The brig Harriett was on passage from Dublin to Barbados and Trinidad when she struck a rock off St David’s Head, drifting beam on for twelve hours; the master, William Kilhier, the crew and one passenger were saved, though there was one fatality, M.L. O’Reilly.
The Proclamation Society was established by William Wilberforce to encourage the implementation of King George III’s Proclamation for the ‘Encouragement of Virtue and for the Prevention of Vice, Profaneness and Immorality’ (1 June 1787). Carmarthen’s was the local chapter for the Diocese of St David’s and made awards for a range of virtuous activities, including services at shipwrecks.
